Khan Academy

Khan Academy

Background

In 2011, something changed in education. Computers, which for years had played the part of glorified doorstops in American classrooms, suddenly began playing a role that futurists had imagined they might: shifting the focus from education-in-batches to individualized learning. Particularly in light of Full Circle's 2009-10 education reform emphasis, EACH, the education circle created an inquiry team to find the right leader to support.

Mission

The Khan Academy was founded by Salman Khan with the vision of enabling anyone to learn anything, anytime, anywhere, for free. It is a stunning vision, and a team of Full Circle members jumped at the chance to be part of making it real.

Full Circle Fund Role

Full Circle members quickly signed up to help in several ways. Peter Kuperman arranged for Sal to appear on the Colbert Report, increasing awareness. Clayton Yee and Kim Jacobson arranged for video footage of interviews with teachers in Los Altos, who had used Khan Academy for a year in a pilot program. Members pitched in together to help "map" Khan Academy lessons and videos to the emerging Common Core standards.
